Diver Magazine's regular movie quiz feature, Blood 'N' Bubble is excerpted from a book in progress by Stephen Weir. Blood 'N' Bubbles tracks a century of scuba diving in feature movies. Another underwater theme mermaids in the movies is also worthy of book. Now and then the two themes collide, as in the movie pictured above. Made in 1959 by Paramount Pictures, this comedy tells the story of a sailor who meets a mermaid while looking for a US warship that he somehow lost after the war! Starring Jerry Lewis, can you name this film?

Jerry Lewis and Dina Merrill starred in the comedy, Don't Give Up The Ship. Lewis plays John Paul Steckler, a Navy officer who somehow managed to lose a destroyer on her way to be decommissioned. Years after the war the Navy comes calling and gives him a choice find the ship, or pay for it. Lewis gives up his honeymoon to look for the ship and the search briefly ends up underwater. The dive/mermaid sequences were filmed by the late Lamar Boren. He went on to be the underwater photographer in such well known movies as Thunderball (1965), Namu, the Killer Whale (1966), You Only Live Twice (1967), Daring Game (1968), Hello Down There (1969), and, The Neptune Factor (1973).
Rating: 2 Bubbles.
