Ocean Master Mask
Over the years, masks have undergone some major changes in order to make them more comfortable and to improve visibility. Gone are the heavy, black rubber masks with metal frames, and in their place are high impact resistant plastic frames and skirts of silicone which is softer, more supple and more durable. Mask skirts can still be black but most are now clear which allows for better light absorption and a reduced feeling of claustrophobia. In addition there has been the development of single or multi-window mask designs which offer varying degrees of visibility. Different types of purge valves have also been installed on various masks to make them easier to clear. Straps and buckles have also changed. Buckles swivel, allowing for greater comfort, and are much easier to adjust.
The extensive line of Ocean Master masks which include single and multi-window
designs have some differences worth noting. The Equalizer Z4 is a four-window
mask surrounded by a clear silicone skirt and includes a purge valve below
the nose pocket. The skirt sealed very well so I had to physically crack
the seal to get water in the mask. With a slow even exhalation through my
nose the mask was clear in seconds and the purge valve is designed to direct
exhaled air away from in front of the faceplate. The purge valve allowed
me to keep my hands and eyes on what I was doing rather than going through
the routine of tilting my head back, applying pressure to the top of the
mask and blowing out. The nose pocket is large and easily accessible even
with heavy gloves on.
The other unique feature is the Q-strap, incorporating a single strap-adjustment buckle located in the middle of the strap which, when in position, is at the back of the head. The buckle can be easily and comfortably adjusted while being worn. Pulling on the two tail ends of the strap will tighten the mask and loosening the straps can be accomplished by simply pushing the two halves of the buckle together with one hand.
The masks are available in a rainbow of frame colours including clear. The Q-strap and purge valve are available on all Ocean Master masks.
